Meet Ms. Thornburg!
My name is Laura Thornburg, and I am thrilled to be teaching my seventh year in Special Education! I grew up in Kalamazoo, MI and received my Bachelor's degree from Western Michigan University in 2010. After graduation, I joined the New York City Teaching Fellows (more information here) and taught Special Education with an emphasis on mathematics to middle school students in the South Bronx. I received my Master's Degree in Special Education from Hunter College in New York City in 2012. After life changes brought me back to southwest Michigan, I found a passion teaching elementary students in Kalamazoo and was excited to bring my experiences to the Mattawan community last year!
As a teacher, I believe that every student deserves an equal opportunity for educational success. With the right tools, every student can and will succeed. It is my goal to provide each and every student with the individual support they need to achieve their academic goals.
When I am not teaching, I am probably spending time with my family, my two awesome pets, or working in my garden. I am a musician at heart, and love attending local concerts and performances. I also spend a lot of time cooking, because there's just nothing better than a fresh, home cooked meal! I'll also take any excuse to travel - I love seeing new places and rediscovering old favorites (like Petoskey, MI!). Even though I'm back in Michigan now, New York City is my favorite place in the world and I LOVE any excuse to visit, talk about, or connect to my second home.
